On our way to filling the trough - thanks Heather! :-)

May 2019

This short half term is whizzing by, and the ever-changing weather is proving an interesting challenge for the preschool. We are advising all children to bring waterproofs and sunscreen in an attempt to be prepared for all weathers, but the children are still managing to spend a lot of time in the garden. We are gradually building up a range of equipment to use in the garden and the children are spending more and more time out there, so thanks to everyone who donated equipment for our mud kitchen.

A special thanks to Heather who saw our piece in the last Meldreth Matters and generously donated some gravel to help us fill our trough! It has made a good start, but we still need more to fill it up – it is a VERY big trough and we have some big plans to make it into a sensory garden and planting patch in the hope that the children will be able to grow and eat some of the results. If you are able to donate anything that we can use as drainage or any topsoil that we could grow plants in, please get in touch by emailing chair@meldrethpreschool.com and we will gratefully collect anything you can offer.

Following on from learning about the life cycle of butterflies, we are now looking at other creatures which have an unusual metamorphosis with some tadpoles that the children are looking after. They will chart their progress as they grow legs and lose their tales before releasing the froglets to continue the cycle next year.

Meldreth Preschool is a charity, and as such we are always keen to find ways to raise funds to buy, upgrade and maintain equipment. One way that you can help without needing to dip into your own pocket is to sign up to www.EasyFundraising.com. This site collects commission payments from online shops and pays them directly to us so it’s a really easy way for us to get money and it doesn’t cost you anything. If you want any more information about how to sign up, please let us know – it’s really simple and it makes a huge difference. Last month we managed to buy a new tablet with the money raised which has made it much easier for the staff to complete their observations and keep parents updated with what the children are up to.

We are currently accepting applications for September as we are already experiencing high demand for some of our sessions, so please get in touch if you would like a place. For applications or any other enquiries, please contact Manager@MeldrethPreschool.com and we will get back to you with any details you require.

April 2019

We have enjoyed another busy half term at Preschool - the children have been making potions in the garden with powder paint and flowers and enjoying feeling like Harry Potter. We have also been growing our very own tomatoes and peppers, which the children have planted from seed and they have been enjoying watching them grow.

Our new garden has a large trough in it that we are keen to put to use with our horticultural adventures but we need a little help filling it. If anyone is able to donate gravel or stones to put in the bottom for drainage, or some topsoil that we can use to grow things in, we would be very grateful. If you are able to help, or know someone who might, please get in touch via chair@meldrethpreschool.com.

Next term we will be looking at life cycles. We have started to look at butterflies and have some crawling caterpillars which have already grown and will soon turn to chrysalids. It will be great to see when these hatch and beautiful butterflies will fly free and the children are very excited to get a chance to see what a real life ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ gets up to.

We are gearing up for the summer term, spending more and more time in the garden and enjoying learning about exercise which has also been prevalent this term, with work sheets and a healthy eating trolley on the go! We have spent some of the money we were awarded from the Tesco Bags of Help on our outdoor learning environment and are hoping to complete our garden makeover over the coming months.

We are also looking forward to some visits from people who help us in the community including the fire service and a dentist who will talk to the children about how to stay safe and healthy.

Now that we have settled into our new home, we are keen to really make the most of the space we have by upgrading some of our equipment. Now that we have an interactive whiteboard that we can use to enhance the children’s learning, we are in need of a laptop to use with it, so if anyone has one that they would be able to donate, or knows of somewhere we can get one relatively cheaply, please let us know.
